What is DHT?

What is DHT?

Hair loss in men is generally caused by androgen and is one of the most common causes of hair loss in men as they age.

Women can also experience this type of hair loss, but it is much less common. Approximately 30 million women in the United States suffer from this type of hair loss, compared to 50 million men.

Human sex hormones are considered to be the most important potential factor in male hair loss.

DHT is a type of androgen. Androgen is a sex hormone that contributes to the formation of “male” sexual characteristics, such as body hair. But it can also cause you to lose your hair sooner and earlier.

There are treatments specifically for DHT to slow the onset of male pattern baldness.

What does the DHT do?

Dihydrotestosterone is derived from testosterone. Testosterone is a hormone that is found in both men and women. Testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone are both androgens, the hormones of pubertal male sexual characteristics. These characteristics include :

Ø Low voice

Ø Increase body hair and muscle

Ø Male Sexual Characteristics

Ø Changing the way fat is stored in the body

As you age, testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone have many other benefits for your body, such as maintaining your overall muscle mass and promoting sexual health and fertility.

Men usually have more testosterone in their bodies. About 10% of testosterone in all adults is converted to DHT with the help of an enzyme called 5-Alpha reductase (5-AR).

Once DHT is free-flowing in your bloodstream, it attaches to receptors on your scalp hair follicles, causing them to shrink and fail to support healthy hair.

The potential harm of DHT goes beyond your hair. Studies have shown that Dihydrotestosterone, especially abnormally high levels of Dihydrotestosterone, is associated with the following factors:

Ø Slow healing of the skin after injury

Ø Prostate Cancer

Ø Coronary heart disease
